Why Volunteer for HPCMV?

Many of our volunteers were introduced to hospice through the death of someone close to them. They understand firsthand and appreciate the value of dignified, compassionate, and supportive end-of-life care.

Volunteers state that they find it personally gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful to be part of a team that provides patients and families with services at a critical time. Volunteers consistently report that helping a person who is terminally ill is about providing comfort and supporting an individualized quality of life plan. Read volunteer testimonials below.

There are different ways to volunteer; all are valuable and meaningful. Each has its own description and time commitment. In truth, we could not operate without the dedicated support of our volunteers. We are so grateful for their presence, commitment, and generosity.

Volunteer Testimonials

Patient Care Volunteer Testimonial

“Having been a patient volunteer for Hospice and Palliative Care of Martha’s Vineyard for over 15 years, there is nothing more rewarding and humbling than being a part of this wonderful organization. I have never met such brave and graceful people in my life. Being a part of our Hospice team has no bounds for compassion with the whole family. It is my honor and privilege to be a part of this organization.”

~Barbara Magnuson Phillips

Admin & Patient Care Volunteer Testimonial

“Joining Hospice as a volunteer can be very rewarding. Volunteer roles are extremely varied; in my short time at Hospice I have walked two dogs, helped organize files, assisted unpacking boxes after the move and provided companionship for Hospice clients freeing the caregiver to get some personal time.  As a volunteer you can make a real difference to a family in need. Seeing the look of gratitude make me realize what a difference a volunteer makes.” ~Carol Bardwell

Fundraising & Event Volunteer Testimonial

“I would absolutely recommend for anyone to volunteer and join the HPCMV Development and Fundraising team. There are so many opportunities, big or small, to be part of making a valuable contribution towards helping our island community specifically when faced with terminal illness and death. 99% of the people and businesses I solicit in support of the Annual Hospice Soiree happily say “YES.” Then they share their praise and story of their experience with Hospice, local and elsewhere, as they were facing end-of-life situations for their loved ones. Is there a better reason for supporting HPCMV?” ~Wiet Bacheller

Elaine Eugster Volunteer of the Year

The 2025 Annual HPCMV Elaine Eugster Volunteer Award winner is Craig Saunders, who was nominated because he truly demonstrates Elaine’s “Always say yes” spirit!  After becoming eligible to volunteer in June 2022, Craig has accepted the greatest number of patient care assignments over the years. With a calm and pleasant attitude and an engaging sense of humor, Craig has entertained many patients with music. It’s no wonder that they enjoy time and discussions with him. Craig always goes the extra distance. He picks up IGI meals, assembles durable medical equipment, and shows up unasked after fundraising events with his truck to help clean up because he sees we need help.

Volunteer FAQ

What are the initial training and requirements for a Patient Care or Administrative volunteer?

15 hours of online webinar training, 2 hours of in-person orientation, a background check and other Human Resources information

Why are the training and eligibility requirements so extensive?

Medicare considers volunteers to be employees so they are held to the same standards as our staff.

What is the schedule for a typical Patient Care assignment?

One day a week for one or two hours

I have a healthcare background. Can I be a professional volunteer in my area of expertise?

We do not have roles for professional volunteers.

Why do Administrative volunteers need the same training as Patient Care volunteers?

People who answer phones, greet visitors, help with agency tasks need to learn about hospice care as well as HIPAA regulations

Do I need the training for Fundraising and Event volunteering?

No, the comprehensive Hospice training is not required for this type of volunteering. Your specific event volunteer role may require some training to use event technology, or attendance of meetings to coordinate logistics of the event, depending on the nature of your role.
