Caring Conversations: Common Types of Grief

Grief can take many forms depending on the loss, the relationship, and a person’s circumstances. While everyone experiences grief differently, several commonly recognized types of grief help describe the ways people process loss. At HPCMV, our counselors can help you cope with grief connected to the death of a person important to you, regardless of whether or not that person was in our care.

While we believe all types of grief are valid, we are not able to support those facing certain types of grief connected to the loss of a pet, the end of a relationship or a job, climate grief, or global grief. Read on to learn more about several common types of grief.

Celebrations in March

Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the women who have shaped our communities and our history. The modern hospice movement itself was led by pioneering women who believed that people facing serious illness deserve dignity, comfort, and compassionate care.

At Hospice & Palliative Care of Martha’s Vineyard, we are proud to continue that legacy with an extraordinary all-women staff team serving patients and families across our island.

National Social Work Month

Please join us in celebrating our amazing team of licensed social workers on the Collaborative Care Team at HPCMV! We appreciate our social workers’ dedication to our community. They integrate social work and counseling with our medical care, including end-of-life and anticipatory grief counseling, resource access assistance, family communication facilitation, Camp By The Sea and other youth grief programming, advance directives conversations, and grief support groups.

March 8-14: National Patient Safety Week

Safety and fall prevention for our patients is a high priority for the team at HPCMV. We have individualized care plans for each patient that include interventions to help promote safety at home. At every visit, our team assesses the home, as well as our patients’ conditions, to identify potential risks or hazards. We can supply durable medical equipment and additional resources that can improve the safety of our patients and provide education to all of our patients, families, and caregivers as needed.
